Priorities

Develop a Remedial Action Plan (RAP) for the contaminated Batchelder site

This is a 33-acre brownfield site of which 10-13 acres could potentially support 2MW of solar plus storage and/or a large scale anaerobic digester. Extend the rail trail from Monroe for recreational use and set aside room for parking.

Increase Municipal Solar

Goal is to go from current 84% solar to 100% of electricity used by municipal buildings.

Reduce Peak Demand Charges in Municipal Buildings

Can be achieved with demand management programs, additional solar and battery storage, and energy conservation measures.

Adoption of Green Building Standards

Encourage the adoption of green building standards for more sustainable construction in both the residential and commercial areas, such as through heat pumps, solar, geothermal, energy efficiency upgrades, and procurement sustainable materials. Such as through LEED Certification or CT Passive House contractors.

Electrify Newtown’s Fleet Vehicles

Add additional electric and hybrid vehicles to the town’s fleet, along with charging stations. Encourage commercial operations to add EV chargers.

Improve Energy Tracking

Improve energy tracking with Energy Star Portfolio Manager and share with other principals.

Collaborate with Other Town Entities & Groups

Work with departments, organizations, and volunteer groups in Newtown on areas concerning recycling, sustainable ground covering, dark sky compliance, and more.
